|Caught At||Route 21|
|Status||Red's Starting Six|
Poliwrath was caught by Red as a Poliwhirl shortly after his victory over Sabrina in Saffron City, with his newly aquired super rod. Poliwhirl became the sixth member of Red's full team rooster, and joined as Red was seriously lacking a capable water-type Pokémon, Red's hope was that Poliwhirl could fill this position in his team.
Red was careful training Poliwhirl, who did not partake in many of his coptitive battles, such as that against Koga. Soon after Red reached Cinnebar Island, Poliwhirl evolved into Poliwrath. This set the stage for Red to use Poliwrath against the fire specialist gym leader of Cinnebar, Blaine. Poliwrath easily defeated Blaine and thus cemented his position within Red's team as his primary water-type Pokémon.
Poliwrath later came in useful once again when Red face Giovanni in the battle for the earth badge. Poliwrath also learnt the move ice-beam, an attack especially weak to dragon type Pokémon.
Poliwrath successfully took down Bruce's fighting and rock Pokémon. His victory over the former proving that Poliwrath had honed his fighting skills to devastating effect. Poliwraths Ice Beam was used to take down Lance's dragons, although Poliwrath was taken down early into the fight against Lance, his effect on the match was crucial in Lance's defeat.
Poliwrath was officially inducted into the hall of fame for being one of the Pokémon used by Red in his victory in the Pokémon League.
Poliwhirl's lax nature meant that he oftern appeared to be unconcerned with training excessivly. Poliwhirl however becomes serious in battle, making it appear as if he saves all his energy for when it really matters. This attitude changed somewhat when Poliwhirl evolved into Poliwrath. Poliwrath takes some inspiration in the way Red's Hitmonchan trains, and the two now seem to have a friendly rivalry.
Poliwrath mental attitude and tendancy to trianing hard cultivated in his superiority over Bruce's fighting Pokémon when Red took on the Elite Four.
